Team,
It was a busy week.
The bonus work for this week is questions 1-15 of the 2020 State Sprint Round. If you are one of the people selected for State MathCounts, you should go through the whole Sprint Round and Target Round.
The MOEMS #4 on Wednesday was a tough one. Our team average was 1.4. Congratulations to Max (4 right), Peter (3), Josiah (2), Mingsu (2), and Lochlan (2).
Only 1 person got Question 4 correct (congratulations, Peter). Question 4 was:
Given that x and y are integers such that x(y + 1) + y = 33, find the least possible value of x + y. [Hint: Add 1 to each side of the equation.]
Any time a question uses the word “integer,” your spidey sense should go off that the answer is likely a negative number. Otherwise, they would have said “whole number.” Eight students answered “17,” which would have been the correct answer if you only considered negative numbers.
SMOY Mini-MathCounts.
Great job at the competition at SMOY on Wednesday afternoon. That was a lot of math for one day. Max got 23 out of 23 possible points and Jonathan got 22 points. Peter got 21 and Lucien got 20.

Enjoy the break,
Coach Ben

Team,
This week we will be taking MOEMS #4. The faster we can get the room set up, the more time you will have to complete the competition. Dr. Gupta was originally scheduled to join us, but unfortunately now has a schedule conflict.
The bonus work is finishing the problems we started during practice or Warm-up #8. They are attached.
Take care,
Coach Ben
